80-hour Wilderness First Responder Certification Course

One of the strongest tools that any outdoorsman can have is knowledge of wilderness medicine and first aid. In the event of an accident, the ability to respond quickly can mean the difference between life and limb. On any adventure, there should always be a designated person who knows first aid and is equipped with a first aid kit. First aid kits should always include bandages, tape, scissors, painkillers, antiseptic solutions, and PPE in the form of gloves and possibly protective eyewear too.

Colorado Wilderness Rides and Guides, a Wilderness Medicine Associates provider, offers Wilderness First Responder training and certification, an 80-hour course assuring that students have the skills and the ability to act quickly and decisively in any situation. We’ll cover basic life support, responding to trauma, including soft tissue injury, circulatory shock, bone and joint injuries such as fractures, head and/or spinal injury, as well as responding to the onset of sudden illness and transport/evacuation planning and implementation. Wilderness first responder students will focus on assessing a situation, improvising solutions, using available resources to stabilize the patient and identify the best way to get the patient to definitive medical treatment. Using natural environments in Eldorado Canyon State Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, we learn how to assess an injury, how to respond immediately, and how to take the best course of action before reaching professional assistance. Our guides come from a medical background and have intimate knowledge of the body and how to react in an emergency situation. This is Wilderness First Responder Training at its finest.

We’ll spend our days in Boulder or Estes Park’s natural scenery, utilizing the formations to practice how to remove a person out of a tight situation, how to find cover to keep them safe, and how to utilize a natural surrounding when getting help. We’ll also learn more about the systems of the body and how to react to deep cuts, broken bones, and concussions among other emergencies. Students will be tested on maintaining calm in a chaotic situation and how to triage a patient. We’ll discuss healing techniques, communication, and having an exit plan.
