Best Mountain Bike Rides In the Front Range for Intermediate and Expert Mountain Bikers

Colorado’s mountain biking country is legendary, featuring some of the most technical terrain in the West, the fastest rides, and generations of great riders. Bikers come from across the world to experience Colorado’s world-class trails. While the Front Range is well known for its accessibility and rides for all ability levels, mountain bikers are especially enthralled by some of the more difficult and technical terrain that that Front Range offers. From the wild and technical lines at Buffalo Creek to the winding trails of Centennial Cone, and the forests of Magnolia, these are some of the roughest tried and true mountain bike trails of the Front Range.

Mountain Biking Buffalo Creek

Set in the hills just outside of Evergreen, Colorado, Buffalo Creek weaves around Little Scraggy Peak, with over 20 miles of fast winding trails, fun technical terrain, and some of the best long rides outside of Denver. The trail starts by following the creek up through a spindly burn zone, following long uphill tracks through exposed forest, before arriving on the rolling hills high above the Evergreen landscape. The trail then drops into the wooded winding tracks underneath and starts a long and fast downhill to the creek below, following tight curves, boulder-strewn technical obstacles, and long flowing sections. After long strenuous uphill and downhill trails, the single-track then rides through a final exposed hillside with spectacular views of the mountains beyond, and the thrilling curves through the Shingle Mill Trail to the end.

Guided Mountain Biking Centennial Cone - Denver Mountain Bike Tours

While the riding here is easier then at Buffalo Creek, Centennial Cone still features the classic long uphill trails of the Front Range, with long, smooth, and flowing trails that take riders to the height of some of the best riding outside of Denver. The trail starts in Idaho Springs at the Mayhem Gulch Trail, and climbs up through the forests just outside of Clear Creek Canyon and joins several trails for smooth, flowing riding above the creek, where we’ll get to look deep into the canyon on one side, and spectacular views of the forests and the hills on the other side. Once over the crest, riders start a long and flowing downhill to the drainage below, with fun and smooth trails and extraordinary scenery the entire way.

Mountain Biking Magnolia and Nederland - Boulder Mountain Bike Tours

Set just outside of Nederland, the trails of Magnolia flow through the dense forests and mountains of the Indian Peaks Wilderness, providing access to a whole system of trails, which features some of the best biking near Boulder. The West Magnolia Trails are going to take mountain bikers weaving through tight trees and fun mixed terrain. Starting off the Peak-to-Peak Highway, the trails feature moderate and slightly technical climbing, followed by fast and flowing downhill rides through loose terrain. There are several junctions, which will allow for different ability levels including some fun technical terrain over boulders and loose trails as well as some optional jumps. Meanwhile riders are treated to spectacular subalpine scenery all around, including the Indian Peaks, the hills looking all the way to Boulder, and deep forests. For riders who are looking for a great ride that’s not too far from the city, Magnolia combines the best of technical riding and great scenery.

Riding these technical trails requires grit and skill being able to endure long uphill trails and fun, fast, and flowing downhill sections with some technical abilities required. Taking you to the height of some of Colorado’s most extraordinary scenery. From the high subalpine plains of the Indian Peaks Wilderness to the wooded deep forests of Buffalo Creek and the dry, dusty reaches of Centennial Cone, these rides are for bikers who are looking for an added challenge, and to test themselves against some of the Front Range’s most legendary trails.
