Winter is coming to Colorado and Colorado Wilderness Rides and Guides is ready to help your explore our hidden gems and share our years of backcountry decision making and knowledge with you! We have our skis and boards tuned, our snowshoes sharpened, our avalanche beacons charged and we’re looking at the forecast with excited eyes. It’s also the best time to be out and doing, with fewer crowds, a changed landscape, cooler temperatures, and a lot to be excited about in the coming months. In winter, the state takes on a whole different character, from the dazzling holiday lights of Pearl Street to the wintery high alpine of Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s one of our favorite seasons. Here’s a guide to some of our favorite winter activities in Colorado.
Ski Touring – Exploring Colorado’s Backcountry
If there’s anything that Colorado is famed for, it’s the wild backcountry. From some of the steepest mountains west of the Mississippi to the most classic ski routes, Colorado’s backcountry ski culture is among the worlds best. From Rocky Mountain National Park to the famed Wildernesses, our ski tours take you to the best of Colorado’s backcountry, with classic lines across the state. The Colorado backcountry is perfect from the introductory skier who is travelling out of the resort for the first time, to some of the most cutting edge descents in the west. Winter through spring is the best time to be out, and as conditions change, more options open up, and we’re able to travel higher and farther than before. For those who are looking for something more mellow than skiing, snowshoeing allows hikers to get deep into the backcountry, onto Colorado’s famed summits, and to areas that most hikers can’t access in the winter. Whether easy trails for first timers, to the top of Colorado’s 14ers, snowshoeing allows access to flat trails to shimmering frozen lakes and waterfalls in Rocky Mountain National Park or the Indian Peaks Wildernesses, or long uphill trails to the top of the famed peaks across the state. Rocky Mountain National Park takes on a different character in the winter, with long snowy trails, wildlife such as deer, elk, moose, and coyotes, and some of Boulder’s iconic lakes, waterfalls, and peaks. Sightseeing allows you to see the best of Colorado’s wintery landscapes in the comfort of heated air-conditioned vans, and with less crowds, it’s the best time to be exploring the best of Boulder and Rocky Mountain National Park. Colorado Wilderness Rides and Guides offers half and full day sightseeing tours on some of Colorado’s most iconic roadways. In Boulder we’ll explore the top of Flagstaff Road and get to overlook the city of Boulder, the Indian Peaks Wilderness and Rocky Mountain National Park, and our full day tours will take us to the heart of the National Park wilderness where we’ll get to see big mountain scenery, wildlife, and one of a kind landscapes. The winter in Colorado can be beautiful, and it can also be treacherous and terrifying. In order to be safe, and to know the terrain and the hazards, Colorado Wilderness Rides and guides is a provider of AIARE Level I, Level II, and Avalanche Rescue courses. AIARE also know as the American Institute of Avalanche Research And Education is a not profit that is dedicated to providing avalanche curriculum to avalanche teaching professionals. With nine Level I courses in Boulder, Loveland, and Broomfield, one Level II course, and two avalanche rescue courses, Colorado Wilderness Rides and Guides has all levels of education covered for the recreational backcountry user. New in 2018, Colorado Wilderness Rides and Guides is also hosting two-hour Know Before You Go Avalanche Awareness Courses in partnership with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

Level 1 Courses are two evening lectures (6 pm – 10 pm) Wednesday and Thursday nights and then all day Saturday and Sunday in the field.). Courses are designed so one does not need to miss work or take PTO and still able to attend.

The Upper Colorado River is one of the few rivers in Colorado that stay consistent all year round with some of the best fly fishing in Colorado. The winter is a time that few dare head up on the river, but once the crowds disperse, that’s when it’s a great time to be out exploring the river. With lower water and less crowds we’ll have more access to areas that are usually blown out in the early spring and summer, and we have more options in where we want to fish as we go looking for trout species that are native only to Colorado. There are few places in the world that have as intricate a trail system as Boulder, Colorado. With dozens of hiking trails leading to the Boulder peaks, they take us to places such as magnificent sandstone formations, arches, cliffs, summits, and overreaching views of Boulder and Denver. Some of our favorite trails include places like Mt. Sanitas and Green Mountain, two of the most prime summits in Boulder, or Royal Arch, with it’s gorgeous views of the eastern plains and Denver.
